FAQ - Turf Care Services

Are chemicals still legal?
Yes, in the City of Ottawa, most turf care pesticides may still be applied legally. We do believe, however, there will be an aesthetic ban which will be implemented gradually in the next several years.

What is your company doing to be proactive in environmentally-friendly turf-care operations?
Lindsay Landscape has been offering organic/pesticide-free turf care alternatives since 2000. Our organic programs have been very successful. Alternatively, for consumers who prefer traditional products, we follow IPM (Integrate Pest Management) practices whereby reduced pesticide applications are standard practice.

Are organic lawn care treatments completely safe?
Organic lawn care products do not contain pesticides, however, all lawn care products should be handled with care. A common sense to personal hygiene and health should always be followed when coming into contact with organic or traditional lawn care products.

What is corn gluten meal?
Corn gluten meal is a byproduct of the wet corn-milling process. Corn gluten meal contains various proteins that act as a natural herbicide to certain (not all) weeds. It should be noted that in order to be effective, corn gluten meal (CGM) must be applied at a very high rate (20lbs/1000 ft2) and at the appropriate time. CGM only has pre-emergent herbicide qualities meaning that it helps to inhibit weed seeds from germinating, but does not have an effect on weeds that have already reached maturity. For more information on CGM, refer to the hyperlink on our links page.

Why is the soil in Ottawa of such poor quality?
Most turf grass lawn in Ottawa are established on clay-based aggregates. The Ottawa area, in particular, has a high Leda-Clay content. This type of clay expands and shrinks rapidly with the gain/loss of moisture. As a result, in times of excess soil moisture the soil becomes saturated and nutrients that would normally be absorbed into the root zone are leached away. In times of low moisture, most water-soluble nutrients are unable to migrate to the root zone because of poor conductivity. The net result is poor turf grass or turf grass that require excess nutrients to maintain its colour, density and overall health.
